About the Competitive Program:

The Competitive program is an opportunity for players ages U11-U19, under the guidance of our Coaching Director and licensed coaches, to play at a competitive level that focuses on developing the player to their highest potential while instilling a passion for the game and teamwork. Teams play matches against skilled and competitive teams in either MAYSA (Madison Area Youth Soccer League) League or State League. The goal is that our players can accelerate their growth both physically and mentally.

While the teams are competitive, the club is committed to making soccer accessible to as many players as possible. It is the goal to place every child on a team.

Player Evaluations/Tryouts:

All kids aged 11U and above interested in playing for Rock Soccer Club for 2023 Fall–2024 Spring season must participate in the team placement/tryout process held early June.

Guidelines for team formation changed in the fall of 2016 and based on the guidelines of the US Soccer Federation (national governing body) and the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association (state governing body): Teams will be formed with the below general guideline. Players are now grouped according to calendar year, not school year. As a guiding practice, Rock Soccer places a high priority on placing players on age appropriate team with comparable skills.

  • Please visit the US Soccer Birth Year Age Chart to determine what age level your child will play.

Competitive Program Player Expectations:

Players are expected to be committed to their team and coaches. In order to develop and reach individual and team goals, players need to respect their coaches as they provide valuable insight and instruction. Players are expected to commit to improving the team, as well as their individual performance. As such, developing teamwork, spirit and togetherness are very important.

Practice:

  • The training and game season typically lasts 12 weeks in fall and 12 weeks in spring.
  • At each coach’s discretion, team may practice prior to or beyond the MAYSA/WYSA season.
  • Team practice dates will be determined by the head coach. Practice will typically be 2 days per week typically 1.5 to 2 hours for each practice.
  • Coaches may decide to practice more.

Player Commitments:

  • Players are members of team for the entire season Fall & Spring
  • Attend all required practices and games.
  • Have their own required equipment and attire for every practice and game.
  • Be at practice at least 10 minutes early ready to practice and to games at least 45 minutes early.
  • Understand playing time is earned by the athlete through both attitude and skill.
  • Adhere to MAYSA’s and the Club’s Parent/Player code of conduct at all times.

League and Tournament Play:

  • The teams will play in the MAYSA Classic league or WYSA’s state league.
  • There are approximately 8 games in fall and 8 games in spring; half home and half away. Travel for classic teams is within MAYSA. State teams can involve travel to other cities including Madison/Milwaukee/Appleton/Sheboygan.
  • Tournaments are selected with coach and may include an overnight trip. Tournaments may be outside of the MAYSA district. MAYSA teams traditionally do 2-4 tournaments and State 4-6 tournaments per year, Fall/Spring combined
  • RSC believes that good player coach communication is the foundation of a successful team. The club does have a formal Grievance Policy should parents or coaches feel they need additional avenues to voice concerns.

* Please note that Girls High School teams play in Fall and Boys teams play in Spring but both tryouts are held in May/June.
